Mission

The mission of the School of Music at Louisiana Tech University is to offer a comprehensive and professional music program that promotes personal growth and the highest standards in academics, pedagogy, and performance among its students and faculty; that fosters and champions the development of knowledge, artistry, professionalism, entrepreneurship, ingenuity, diversity, equity, accessibility, inclusive excellence, and integrity within and among current and future leaders in the field of music; and that enriches the cultural life of our campus, our community, and our region.

Objectives

The Louisiana Tech University School of Music is committed to:

  • educating and cultivating a diverse student body drawn from a wide variety of interests, experiences, viewpoints, backgrounds, and life experiences;

  • training students to think critically about music and to continually seek a deeper, more thorough understanding of the historical and contemporary cultural contexts in which music is created, performed, and consumed;

  • raising the national and global profile of Louisiana Tech University through excellence and innovation in performance, research, creative work, and teaching;

  • providing a rigorous, comprehensive education for future professional performers, music educators, music scholars, and music industry professionals while simultaneously offering musical opportunities to enrich the lives of all students at Louisiana Tech;

  • providing leadership at the local, regional, national, and international level in the field of music, and serving as an advocate for K-12 music education in the United States, especially in the State of Louisiana;

  • preparing the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in music;

  • training future music educators at the primary and secondary levels;

  • cultivating a rich, collaborative learning environment both on campus and in the community;

  • enriching the cultural life of Ruston, Northern Louisiana, and the region.

Requirements for Admission and Degrees

Entering first-year and transfer music majors in the Performance, Music Education, and Liberal Arts concentrations are required to audition in the major performance medium prior to acceptance; the audition may be on-site or via recording. Entering students in the Music Industry Studies concentration must submit a portfolio for evaluation prior to acceptance. Incoming students must take a placement exam in music theory prior to the first week of classes; transfer students must also take placement exams in piano, music theory, and music history. Credit for music coursework from other institutions and placement in the curricula will be based on the scores achieved on placement exams. All students are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts as music majors and follow the appropriate curriculum corresponding to the academic year of entry. In addition to completion of the requirements of the music degree and chosen concentration, students must complete the University’s general education requirements (GER).

Ensembles

All School of Music ensembles are open to qualified students regardless of major. Membership for most ensembles is by audition and can be arranged by contacting the appropriate director or conductor.

  • Instrumental Ensembles: Marching Band of Pride; Hoop Troop; University Wind Ensemble; University Symphonic Band; University Concert Band; University Jazz Ensemble; Percussion Ensemble; Chamber Orchestra; Guitar Ensemble; Popular Music Ensemble; and various chamber ensembles.
