CREDIT FOR NON-CREDIT POLICY & PROCEDURE
To accommodate the ever-changing landscape of higher education, Louisiana Tech University recognizes the value of providing academic credit for applicable non-credit courses. Non-credit achievements include professional certifications or licenses, micro-credentials/badging, online courses with valid assessments, continuing education units, and more. These pathways ensure that each learning experience can be a step toward something more widely recognized and that some training programs are equal to credit courses in terms of knowledge learned.
Louisiana Tech University currently provides credit through the Advanced Placement Program, various Credit by Examination programs, credit for military experience, and credit through the DANTES program. However, recognizing the value of learning outside of the traditional classroom through industry/business training and other certifications/examinations can serve as a strategic approach in bridging the gap between industry and academia.
POLICY STATEMENT
This policy is optional for academic programs to implement or adopt. This policy establishes guidelines for awarding credit for non-credit activities while maintaining academic integrity and aligning with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) principles of accreditation. Specifically, SACSCOC Standard 10.8 states:
The institution publishes policies for evaluating, awarding, and accepting credit not originating from the institution. The institution ensures (a) the academic quality of any credit or coursework recorded on its transcript, (b) an approval process with oversight by persons academically qualified to make the necessary judgments, and (c) the credit awarded is comparable to a designated credit experience and is consistent with the institution’s mission. (Evaluating and awarding academic credit). SACSCOC, 2024
It is Louisiana Tech University’s obligation to ensure credit awarded from outside of its own programs achieve the same learning objectives, experiences, knowledge, and skills as students who complete courses at Louisiana Tech University. To have non-credit course content approved as equivalent to college level credit, the course must first go through a rigorous evaluation process by qualified faculty within the discipline.
A maximum of 12 credits can be awarded for the non-credit offerings taken and assessed after the student has been admitted into a Louisiana Tech University’s undergraduate or graduate program. Students cannot use more than 12 credits accrued from non-traditional sources.
